Dear families,

Please be advised that Brannoxtown CNS will close at 12 noon on Wednesday the 26th of March to facilitate engagement of all school staff with the Bí Cineálta Anti-Bullying Procedures.

The Bí Cineálta procedures have been rolled out by the Department of Education and were developed in collaboration with education partners. The revised procedures  provide direction and guidance to schools, in relation to measures to prevent and address bullying behaviour in schools.

The Bí Cineálta procedures are centred on a child-rights-based approach and support a partnership approach where all members of the school community work together to prevent and address bullying behaviour. The procedures support schools to develop clear strategies to prevent and address these bullying behaviours.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact Deirdre on Aladdin.

Warm regards,

World Book Day and Book Fair (28/02/2025)

Happy Friday Everyone,

Just a reminder that next Thursday the 6th of March is World Book Day. To celebrate, we are delighted to invite all the children to dress us as their favourite book character or to bring their favourite book to school. We encourage everyone to do their best to make some or all of their costumes. This could mean using old or recycled clothes, painting an old t shirt or making a prop to add to a costume. Classes will be given reduced homework next week to give them time to prepare their costumes.

In other exciting news, we will have a travelling book fair visiting our school from the 13th to the 20th of March. Each class will get the opportunity to visit the book fair and create a wish list of books or stationery they might like to buy. Students can pay for their books using cash and any books that are not in stock will be delivered to the school.

Best homemade World Book costumes from each class will win a voucher towards books at the book fair.

Books start at just €3.70 and every book purchased helps go towards getting new books to fill our class libraries. You can explore some of the titles that will be on offer at the link below.

    • Please remind families that anyone who is unwell should remain at home to help prevent the spread of infection.

    Playball Coaching Programme (14/01/25)

    Dear families,

We are delighted to announce that we have booked Playball, a sport and movement coaching programme,  to work with all classes for a 10-week block. Playball coaches start with us this Friday, the 17th of January. While some of you may be familiar with Playball birthday parties , Playball also provides a superb and age appropriate P.E. curriculum to schools which comes highly recommended.

Trained professional coaches will work with our pupils to introduce children to a wide range of sports and support children to engage confidently in P.E. Playball fosters a love of sport so that all pupils can form a positive relationship with sports and develop active, fun and healthy lifelong habits.

We are incredibly grateful to our Parents’ Association who have offered to subsidise a portion of the programme. The remaining cost of Playball per child is €3.00 per week and €30 in total. This can be paid weekly or in full. Tomorrow, all families will receive a link on Aladdin for Playball e-payments.

We are very excited to welcome the Playball coaches to our school this Friday as we know it is going to be an incredibly enriching and invigorating experience for all our pupils.

    Warm regards,

    The BCNS Team

Science Week Visit from Dr Mehmood (13/11/24)

To coincide with Science Week, we welcomed Dr. Mustafa Mehmood, a parent of one our pupils to visit our classes to teach us about CPR: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. His workshop was engaging, hands-on and incredibly valuable for all of  our pupils. The children learned about the physiology of CPR, how to care for a person who is unresponsive and how to administer CPR. The children put their learning into practice on a model brought in by Dr. Mehmood and on their own teddies. Finally, our pupils were invited to ask Dr. Mehmood questions about his work and caught a glimpse of what it is like to work in an Emergency Department. We are so grateful to have participated in this workshop – thank you Dr. Mehmood.

Please see attached flyer from Sinead.

    Halloween Fun!! (24/10/24)

We had an incredible day here Brannoxtown CNS and it was a joy to see the array of  costumes that came through our doors. A huge well done to our Junior and Senior Infants who wowed us with a spooktacular performance of Oíche Shamhna and The Witch!!

Our Senior Room pupils set up Hallowe’en stations both indoors and outdoors for the school. On the yard, we had Spider Web Shoot Out, Slime Splat, Eye-Bowling and Spider Web Limbo. Inside, we had the Witch’s Lab, Flour Dunk, Candy Apples and Slime Stations!! The children had a ball and we ate so proud of the leadership and care shown by our 5th and 6th class pupils.

After a busy morning, all classes had the chance to wind down and enjoy a movie together with some popcorn and pumpkin seeds to munch on!

After what has been an action packed first term, BCNS pupils have certainly earned a fun and restful midterm break! We look forward to seeing you all back on Monday the  4th of November!

    Dear families,

From the staff of Brannoxtown CNS, we wish to say a huge thank you to all members of our school community for the incredible effort, generosity and community spirit that was alive in our school yesterday. We were blown away by the thought and time that went into setting up the stands – what a wonderful way for our pupils to be able to learn about the cultures and countries that enrich the BCNS school community. Yesterday, we had stands representing Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Moldova, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, U.S.A. (I hope I haven’t left anyone out!).

Please click on the links at the bottom of this message to access a video and a gallery of photos that capture the BCNS Culture & Diversity Day.

Once again, a huge thank you to all families – we feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive and united school community. A word of congratulations also to our wonderful pupils for their performances and for their respectful and positive attitudes, not only yesterday but throughout the school year.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

    3rd - 6th Class Visit Microsoft Dream Space (12/04/2024)

      Dear parents,

On Wednesday, 3rd – 6th Class visited Microsoft Dream Space – it was an incredible experience. Below is Harry & Sebastian’s account of how the day went and a video created by Múinteoir Eoin that offers a glimpse of what our pupils got up to!

      Microsoft Dream Space

On Wednesday, the 10th of April, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class of Brannoxtown Community National School visited Microsoft Dream Space at the Microsoft headquarters in Leapordstown, Dublin. When we arrived, we were greeted by the Microsoft team who led us into Dream Space. First, we left our bags in the lockers; then, they told us the rules of the area and explained what we would be doing. Next, we were divided into our classes and given numbered codes. Straight after that, we were handed laptops to complete a thirteen question quiz. Once everyone finished the quiz, we sat down at tables where there were booklets that contained questions on the activities that we were doing and also contained brain warm-ups. Once we concluded the brain warm ups, the team showed us a mini self driving car called Indi. Indi had a colour sensor at the bottom, so when she passed over the rubber squares, Indi received different instructions depending on the colour. For example, green is go, red is stop and blue is turn right etc. For lunch we were served three slices of pizza and some chips. After lunch we went back to Indi and were told in our groups of three to complete a series of challenges for the miniature self driving car Indi. When we had finished with Indi. We were split into 3rd and 4th class in one group and 5th and 6th class in the other. We were given microchips to code. The microchips had 25 LED lights so we could make symbols and our names they could also play music. That concluded our tour in Microsoft Dream Space and we left. We had an incredible day developing our coding and STEM skills and cannot wait to for our return trip on the 30th of April!

Oide’s ‘Formative Assessment Using Digital Portfolios’ initiative (29/01/2024)

                          Dear Parents,

We are delighted to share with you that Brannoxtown CNS was 1 of 24 schools across Ireland selected to participate in Oide’s ‘Formative Assessment Using Digital Portfolios’ initiative. Oide facilitators will deliver training to BCNS teachers who will then roll the initiative out at school level. Digital portfolios are “student-owned dynamic digital workspaces wherein students can capture their learning and their ideas, access their collections of work, reflect on their learning, share it, set goals, seek feedback and showcase their learning and achievements” (NCCA 2013).

Our school will be using Seesaw (http://seesaw.me), a secure online journal where students can document and reflect on what they are learning in class. Your child will be able to add the things we work on (including photos, videos, worksheets, drawings and voice recordings) to their Seesaw journal and we can share them privately with you and other family members to view and comment on throughout the school year.

In order for your child to use Seesaw, the app needs your child’s name in order to be able to associate work like their photos, videos or voice recordings with their account. Seesaw only uses this information to provide the service and doesn’t advertise in Seesaw, create profiles of students, or share or sell your child’s personal information or journal content. You can read more about their strong privacy promises here: https://web.seesaw.me/privacy. Under an EU law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in order for your child to use Seesaw, the school must get your consent. For more information on GDPR, please visit https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/law-topic/data-protection/reform/rights-citizens.

I hope that your child will enjoy using Seesaw to document and share their learning this year. Please sign below and return this permission slip so that your child can use Seesaw.

                          Kind Regards,

A huge thank you to the hard work that all our teachers do here at Brannoxtown CNS to make school and learning such a positive experience for all.

Finally, a massive well done to our pupils who always try their very best and who look out for their friends and classmates with so much kindness and care – we really are  lucky to be a part of this close-knit school community!

                          Learning Toolkits (14/06/23) Updated (27/06/23)

The new ‘Free Primary School Books Scheme’ enables schools to invest in high-quality teaching and learning resources, including textbooks, for all classes. As part of the scheme, the DES advised that parents may need to buy additional items for children to use at school, such as a minimum number of personal workbooks and stationery for your child’s own use, which cannot be used by another child.

As a school still in its infancy, BCNS is building its resource bank of school rental books. We are catching up with other well-established schools. This is because DES grants have been based on enrolment numbers and our school has grown from 4 children in 2018 to 88 children, today. The grants received have fallen far-short of what was needed to meet our ambitions for children’s learning. We have been gratefully reliant on gifts and donations and the goodwill of our community, to supplement our limited budget and we have received second-hand books when offered by schools updating their resource bank. All of the grant for the ‘Free Primary School Books Scheme’ is being deployed on essential school books and resources for children at BCNS in 2023/2024 including textbooks, reference books (atlases and dictionaries), reading schemes, workbooks, copies (refil pads, folders and ring-binders) and online subscriptions for English, Irish, Maths and SESE.

A Learning Toolkit has been prepared for each class for the 2023/2024 School Year. For each class, items on the personal Learning Toolkit cost €18-25. The ‘Learning Toolkit’ replaces the traditional ‘Booklist’ and is available available for each class at the links below:

                          BCNS School Calendar 2023/2024

The BCNS Calendar for 2023/2024  is based on the calendar for all schools published by the Department of Education and Skills (DES). The Easter break is earlier-than-usual in 2024. Because of this, the school will take 3 discretionary days to extend the May bank holiday weekend. School will be closed from Friday, May 3rd to Wednesday, May 8th (inclusive).

                          Bag2School - Drop off at BCNS Tuesday 14/03 & 15/03 (8:30-9am)

Parents in the ‘BCNS Parents Group’ are running a clothing collection in conjunction with Bag2School next Wednesday, 15th March.
By getting involved in our Bag2School collection you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate any unwanted textiles. What do Irish students believe about Climate Change and how do they feel about it? Senior Room students have designed a Climate Change Student Survey to answer this question. The survey for students from 3rd class at primary to 6th year at post-primary, complements research published last year by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ‘Climate Change in the Irish Mind’ (2021). The EPA surveyed 4,000 adults aged 18 to 65. This survey is to ensure students’ voices are part of the ongoing discussions about Climate Change. We believe the leaders of tomorrow are sitting in the classrooms of today… Your view counts!

School Bus Transport Scheme Review (24/01/22)

Under the terms of the School Transport Scheme, primary school children are eligible for school transport if they live 3.2 kilometres or more from their closest school, ‘having regard to ethos and language’ (i.e., denomination and language of your choice).

The DES is now inviting parents to complete a survey to review the school bus transport scheme. It takes just 2-3 minutes to complete. Part 2 is for parents whose children do not currently avail of the scheme. To help us set-up our Student Council, our final visit by a public representative was by Senator Vincent Martin on Tuesday, November 9th. Senator Martin answered additional questions about his election to Seanad Éireann and about his Green Party’s policies to protect ourearth. It was a busy morning for Senator Vincent Martin at Brannoxtown CNS before he left our school for Seanad Éireann! Míle buíochas, arís!

Team Hope - Shoebox Appeal Online (08/11/21)

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Team Hope is asking for online donations to their gift-filled shoeboxes again this year. Donations enable the network of local partners in Africa and Eastern Europe to purchase items for shoeboxes for children affected by poverty. Often these shoeboxes are the only gift that a child will receive at Christmas and the joy that they deliver is incredible. Parents can learn more and contribute here.

                          Cllr. Peggy O' Dwyer - Visitor (04/11/21)

Our third Councillor visit was by Peggy O’ Dwyer and we learned so much! Although children had 10 (planned) questions for Peggy, we veered a little off-script when we discovered Peggy’s love of animals! We hope Peggy enjoyed her gifts of a Homework Journal, Homework Pass and Honey and the special Thank You card that children so carefully constructed to say a huge thanks to each and every visitor who shares their expertise and experience with us.

Cllr. Noel Heavey - Visitor (02/11/21)

Thank you, Councillor Noel Heavey, for visiting the Senior Room, to talk about your work . Children had 10 (planned) questions for Noel, but we did not expect hi to sing for us (‘My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean’), nor did we expect to sing for him (‘What a Wonderful World’)! We are delighted to hear that Noel’s Homework Pass (awarded by children) is in his back pocket for a special day when he needs to put his feet up and have a cuppa and take some time out from his very busy schedule!

Thank you, Pastor Richard Blaney! (21/10/21)

Huge thanks to Pastor Richard Blaney and colleagues for organising our visit to Brannockstown Baptist Church (in separate groups) this week. All children had an opportunity to see what one Church in the Christian faith looks like, inside and out. Children prepared for our visit by sharing what we know already about different places of worship. This is part of our Patron’s Programme, Goodness Me, Goodness You! (GMGY) to support children to develop an understanding and awareness of different values and beliefs. Senior Room children learned about the significance of the Church in the village’s history, as part of local studies.

                          Cllr. Tracey O' Dwyer - Visitor (19/10/21)

We were thrilled to have our first Councillor visit to the Senior Room, when Tracey O’ Dwyer came to talk about her work on Tuesday. Children had 10 (planned) questions for Tracey … and many more! We especially appreciated Tracey’s gifts of time and honesty. She also brought physical gifts-pencils and pencil sharpeners with the ‘waste and rubbish management’ reminder: reduce, reuse and recycle!

                          First Green Flag! (19/10/21)

On Tuesday, October 19th, a very special guest, Cllr. Tracey O’ Dwyer  raised the ‘Litter and Waste Flag’ with Múinteoir Dawn. Múinteoir Deirdre lead us in song (‘What a wonderful World’) on keyboard. Brian Byrne (author and editor) visited Brannoxtown CNS for the very special ceremony to raise our first Green Flag and captured some of the magic in his blog post!
